No federal holidays disrupt April’s timeline, as neither Good Friday nor Easter Sunday are recognized by the Social Security Administration.
Social Security payments for April 2026 follow a long-established schedule used by the Social Security Administration (SSA) since May 1997, with no adjustments required this month for holidays or weekends. According to Futbolete, benefits - including retirement, survivor, and disability payments - are issued based on a recipient’s birth date rather than birth year. This staggered system helps manage payments efficiently for more than 70 million beneficiaries, preventing delays and avoiding strain on processing systems. By spreading out transactions across multiple dates, the SSA ensures a smoother and more reliable distribution of funds to millions of Americans each month.

FIVE KEY SSA PAYMENT DATES FOR APRIL

Social Security payments in April 2026 began on April 1 with the distribution of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Because the date falls on a Wednesday, payments were issued as scheduled, as reported by Futbolete, with no need for early deposits or delays. This marks the first time this year that SSI is paid on its designated date, as the March payment was released early on February 27 - the last business day of that month - resulting in no SSI deposit during March.

On April 3, benefits were sent to individuals who started receiving Social Security before May 1997, as well as those who receive both Social Security and SSI. These recipients follow an older payment structure that remains separate from the staggered system introduced later.

From April 8 onward, payments are distributed based on beneficiaries’ birth dates. Those born between the 1st and 10th are paid first, followed by individuals born between the 11th and 20th on April 15.

The final round, on April 22, covers those born between the 21st and 31st. This schedule applies to retirement, disability (SSDI), and survivor benefits for recipients enrolled after April 1997.

In 2026, Social Security benefits saw a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) effective from January. Following this increase, the average monthly benefit for retired workers stands at approximately $2,071, while couples receiving payments jointly average around $3,208 per month, as reported by Futbolete.

Benefit amounts vary depending on earnings history and the age at which a person begins claiming. Individuals who retire at full retirement age - 66 for most beneficiaries in 2026 - can receive up to $4,152 per month. However, according to Futbolete, those who worked for at least 35 years at the maximum taxable income level and delayed claiming benefits until age 70 are eligible for the highest possible monthly payment of up to $5,181.
