Simone Biles clarifies mystery health scare was not caused by accident or violence after revealing she almost died

Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles has revealed that she recently endured one of the most frightening health experiences of her life, leaving her bedridden for much of the week as she recovers.

The 11-time Olympic medalist shared the update on her Instagram Stories on Saturday, July 6, posting a photo of her arm covered in hospital wristbands and revealing that she had been hospitalized following a serious medical emergency.

“I'm not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today's age,” Biles wrote on her Instagram Stories. “But almost dying wasn't on my bingo card earlier this week.” “This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life. Especially since Jonathan [Owens] was in Indy for practices," she continued.


Biles said she has spent the week recovering at home while surrounded by support from family and friends.

“I've been in bed resting this week, I'll explain sooner or later but s/o to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited & or sent flowers,” Biles continued on her Instagram Stories. “Loooovveeee y'all.”

The gymnastics star later shared photos of flower bouquets she had received during her recovery, along with a picture of herself resting in bed with her two dogs. Another post included a screenshot of her resting heart rate with the caption, “I'll be here.”

What happened to Simone Biles?

While Biles did not disclose the exact nature of the incident, she later clarified on X that the scare was health-related.

Responding to a fan who asked in Portuguese whether the incident involved “health, accident, or violence,” Biles replied: “health.”


The revelation came just days after Biles appeared healthy and active on social media. Three days earlier, she had shared a video of herself performing flips on a large backyard trampoline alongside fellow gymnast Zoe Miller while enjoying her break from competition.

Alongside the clip, Biles wrote, "Summer nights playing stick it."

Biles, 29, is widely regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. A seven-time Olympic champion, she captured three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics after making a celebrated return to the Games following an extended break to prioritize her mental health.

In February, she also attended the Milan Winter Olympics, where she comforted American figure skater Ilia Malinin after the heavily favored athlete fell out of medal contention.
