The annual event at the Washington Hilton was interrupted after several loud bangs were heard, prompting panic among attendees. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of Trump’s Cabinet were rushed out as guests reportedly took cover under tables while security agents secured the venue, reported multiple outlets, including Reuters.
Soon after the incident, Trump posted on social media praising law enforcement and confirming that the suspect had been detained. 'There were earlier reports the shooter was killed, but these proved to be inaccurate,' wrote TMZ.
"Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job." Trump wrote adding "They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement."
"They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again."
Earlier, CNN reported that Trump was safe, citing a source. According to an administration official, Cabinet members were also unharmed.
Reports suggest the incident happened near the ballroom entrance, causing confusion and fear inside the packed venue. Video of the events circulating on social media heard multiple loud pops before Secret Service agents moved quickly to shield and evacuate top officials.
Reuters noted that around 2,600 attendees were present, with many diving under tables as agents in combat gear secured the area.
