Savannah Guthrie’s mom Nancy was allegedly 'abducted' from home in the 'middle of the night’: Cops share chilling updates; all you need to know
Nancy Guthrie, mother of broadcaster Savannah Guthrie, is missing. Police suspect foul play, believing she was taken from her home against her will. An investigation is underway, with her residence declared a crime scene. Authorities are reviewing...

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) launched a search for Nancy Guthrie, 84, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, following her disappearance on Saturday, January 31, 2026. She was last seen at her residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue in Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson, Arizona, at around 9:30 p.m. local time.
In a social media post, the PCSD informed that Nancy has brown hair and blue eyes. She is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs around 150 lbs. It is currently unknown what clothes she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.
Nancy's home being investigated as ‘crime scene’
Two days later, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Nancy's home is being investigated as a "crime scene" rather than a "search mission."
In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Monday (February 2, 2026), Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that he "believes a crime has been committed." "At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction," Sheriff Nanos added.
"We have an 84-year-old woman who went to bed Saturday night, and come Sunday morning, she's gone," Nanos tells PEOPLE in an interview on Monday. "We know, at least we believe, and I believe we know, she did not walk out of that home on her own."
Nanos further asserted that Nancy's "physical mobility was quite limited for a variety of reasons," and that it is highly unlikely that she wandered off.
"She is really just as sharp as a tack," Nanos tells PEOPLE. "And that too is concerning—that here you have this lady who's got all her wits about her; she knows what's going on. So yeah, somebody came into that home, and I believe took her out there without her permission. It was against her will," the sheriff added.
Nanos also stated that police are working with different vendors to download and review home security footage, adding, "What we have done is we have taken what we believe is biological DNA-type evidence, and we are submitting it to our labs, crime labs ... Basically, they'll do a rapid search."
Cops scan camera footage
A representative for the Pima County Sheriff's Office said that investigators are looking at registered sex offenders in the area while scanning and examining videos from cameras at Guthrie's home, neighbors' residences, local businesses, and traffic lights, according to TMZ.
Police refused to comment on whether blood was found inside the home, if the home was in disarray from a struggle, or if there was forced entry. According to TMZ, the sheriff's department stated that they're talking with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which has a long history of working with kidnapping and missing persons cases.
Speaking to TMZ, the sheriff's spokesperson said that Customs and Border Protection is also involved in the case because specially trained K-9 dogs of the agency were used to help search for Guthrie. Police have not named any suspect.
Nanos extended his gratitude and thanked those wanting to "help" and add "But we really do have an obligation to protect the integrity of this investigation, of any investigation."
In a press conference earlier on Monday, Nanos said that Nancy's disappearance was reported on Sunday, February 1, when a friend noticed she was not at church and called one of her adult children.
Savannah, 54, was absent from Today on Monday, and her co-anchor Craig Melvin said during the broadcast, "We want to get right to what is a deeply personal story for us. Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona," as quoted by PEOPLE.
In a statement to the show, Savannah said, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” the news outlet reported.
