Federal officials said the shooting was an act of self-defense, while the city’s mayor condemned it as “reckless” and unnecessary.
Why Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed?
Good was fatally shot by an agent after a group of people allegedly began blocking officials during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Videos recorded by bystanders from different vantage points and shared on social media show an officer approaching an SUV stopped across the middle of the road, ordering the driver to open the door and grabbing the handle.
The SUV then begins to move forward. A different ICE officer, who was standing in front of the vehicle, pulls out his weapon and fires at least two shots into the SUV at close range, jumping back as the vehicle moves ahead. It remains unclear from the videos whether the vehicle made contact with the officer. The SUV later sped into two cars parked along a nearby curb before crashing to a stop.
Was Renne Nicole Good turned away from ICE officers?
One side of the internet insisted that she attempted to “run over” an ICE agent. This claim was supported by interpretations of the videos, arguing that the “front wheel straightens out after reversing, and the tire starts spinning in the direction of the officer before continuing the turn.”
Self-defense theory was also circulated online, saying Renee Nicole Good's SUV made contact with one ICE officer's foot. However, from the footage, it was not clear if this was before or after she was being shot.
What the Minneapolis police chief and Homeland Security said
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara offered a brief account of the shooting while speaking to reporters. In contrast to federal officials, O’Hara did not claim that the driver was attempting to harm anyone. He said the woman had been shot in the head.
“This woman was in her vehicle and was blocking the roadway on Portland Avenue. ... At some point a federal law enforcement officer approached her on foot and the vehicle began to drive off,” the chief said, as quoted by AP.
