Born into a wealthy and influential Roman aristocratic family, Marcus Aurelius is widely regarded as the last great Stoic philosopher of antiquity. He was also the final ruler among what the 18th-century historian Edward Gibbon famously called the “Five Good Emperors” of Rome.
Marcus began studying philosophy around the age of twelve and ultimately devoted himself primarily to Stoicism, a philosophy that deeply shaped his life and reign. He died March 17, 180, in Vindobona [Vienna, Austria] or Sirmium, Pannonia.
Aurelius gave several quotes on multiple topics, including life, happiness, and self-control. According to Parade, many of the quotes from Aurelius come directly from his own book, Meditations, considered one of the greatest philosophical works.
