For centuries, Tibetan Buddhism has explored one of humanity’s oldest questions: What is the true purpose of life? While philosophers, religions, and modern thinkers have offered countless interpretations, many people still struggle to arrive at a clear answer. Yet some spiritual traditions argue that the answer is far simpler than people imagine. Among those who have consistently spoken about life’s deeper purpose is the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, whose teachings focus on compassion, responsibility, and the ethical duties humans share toward one another.

Meaning of the Quote

The quote, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them,” by Dalai Lama highlights the importance of compassion as the foundation of human life. It suggests that our existence gains deeper meaning when we focus on supporting and uplifting others rather than pursuing only personal success or gain. Helping others can take many forms: kindness, empathy, guidance, or simply being present for someone in need.

The second part of the quote offers a practical and universal principle. Not everyone may always have the ability, resources, or opportunity to help others, but everyone can choose not to cause harm. By encouraging people to avoid hurting others through actions, words, or indifference, the message promotes a basic moral responsibility that applies to everyday life.
