Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor best known for his Meditations on Stoic philosophy. Born on April 26, 121 CE, in Rome, Italy, in a Roman aristocratic family, Aurelius is widely regarded as the last great Stoic philosopher of antiquity. He was also the final ruler among what the 18th-century historian Edward Gibbon famously called the “Five Good Emperors” of Rome, according to Yale University Press.

Aurelius began studying philosophy around the age of twelve and ultimately devoted himself primarily to Stoicism, a philosophy that deeply shaped his life and reign. He died March 17, 180, in Vindobona [Vienna, Austria] or Sirmium, Pannonia.
