Pregnant woman carries baby to term despite knowing she would not survive, what Florida couple does next will surprise you; here’s how a clip from Grey’s Anatomy inspires the child's mother to make a brave decision
A Florida woman, Catherine Mornhineway, chose to carry her baby girl, Haven, to term despite a diagnosis of anencephaly, a condition incompatible with life. Inspired by a medical drama, the couple took a brave decision, hoping to save other infant...

The world turned upside down for Mornhineway, the expectant mother, and her partner, Andrew Ford, when they learned that their unborn baby likely had a condition known as anencephaly. The couple got to know about the condition, which reportedly affects 1 in 5,250 babies, during a 14-week ultrasound in June 2025, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
The condition meant that their baby’s skull and brain would never fully develop and that the baby would not survive after birth. After the ultrasound, a doctor told them about the condition. It is a severe birth defect that severely impairs brain and skull development.
How did Catherine react to the shocking news?
Doctors told the couple that most parents choose to terminate their pregnancy, as the diagnosis is incompatible with life. Catherine said that she remained unsure how to move forward, PEOPLE reported, citing The Times.
A turning point came when a clip from a popular medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, inspired the couple, and they decided to carry their baby to term. The clip showed a woman in the same situation.
Catherine and Andrew decided to carry their daughter to full term so that she could hopefully help save the lives of other babies. The couple named her Haven. According to Fox 13, Haven symbolized a "safe harbor" and "light in the dark."
Catherine, already a mom of three, delivered Haven on Dec. 11 at Florida Brandon Hospital. The baby girl Haven survived for four days in the NICU, and Catherine and Andrew said they spent the time they had with their baby together as a family. “With the little bit of time that we got with her, we just wouldn't trade any of it,” Andrew told Fox 13.
Catherine added that they took Haven outside to the hospital’s bereavement garden with the approval of hospital staff so that she could “feel the sun.”
Catherine and Andrew donate Haven’s organs
The couple donated Haven’s organs through the LifeLink Foundation, an organization dedicated to saving lives through organ and tissue donation, per the Times and Fox 13.
"We don’t often hear stories of women carrying babies to term with the sole intent of donating that baby’s organs to someone else who needs a lifesaving transplant," LifeLink’s public affairs manager, Sherri Day, told Fox 13. "What a remarkable family."
