The Powerball jackpot has risen to an estimated $33 million for the December 29 draw after no ticket matched all six numbers on Saturday, reigniting nationwide interest. The winner can opt for the full $33 million paid out over 30 years as an annuity with annual increases of 5 per cent, or take a one-time lump-sum cash payment of about $15.2 million before taxes, according to Powerball.com, as cited by IndyStar.

Lottery officials continue to remind players that the odds of hitting the jackpot remain slim at 1 in 292.2 million. Even so, Powerball remains hugely popular across 45 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Interest has stayed strong following last week's record winning.

Powerball excitement surged on Christmas Eve when an Arkansas man won a massive $1.817 billion jackpot, the second-largest lottery prize in US history. The single winning ticket matched all six numbers - 4, 25, 31, 52, 59 and red Powerball 19 - with a 2x multiplier, offering a lump-sum payout of $834.9 million. Lottery officials said it marked just the second Powerball jackpot win in Arkansas, the first coming in 2010.
