According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured a magnitude of 7.8 and occurred off Mindanao island at a depth of 39 miles (63 kilometers).
One video from Davao City's live camera captured the moment strong shaking began. The footage shows the city rattled by the quake before the camera feed suddenly went dark after a power outage.

Other videos from General Santos City appear to show significant structural damage. Footage shared online captures a building partially collapsing during the shaking, while another clip shows damage and smoke visible near General Santos International Airport following the earthquake.

A separate video believed to be from Mindanao, close to the quake's epicenter, shows the upper floors of a building crumbling as dust and debris rise into the air. Another widely shared clip appears to show a Jollibee building suffering structural failure during the earthquake.
Several videos also capture the immediate reaction of residents. Students can be seen rushing to safety as the ground shakes, while others hold onto motorcycles and nearby objects to maintain their balance. In some clips, students gather in open spaces and sit on the ground while waiting for the tremors to subside.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimated the quake's magnitude at 7.7, while an initial assessment by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) placed it at 8.2, according to Reuters.
US's tsunami.gov said that tsunami waves of 1 to 3 metres are possible along parts of the Philippines. The advisory also forecast waves between 0.3 and 1 metre for Malaysia, while a tsunami advisory was issued for Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).
