Ohio Crime News: Tragedy struck in Ohio when a man on vacation with his wife, just days away from celebrating his 40th birthday, was shot and killed at a restaurant. The victim, identified as Robert “Rob” Russell, was visiting Put-in-Bay, a small island resort village on Lake Erie, to celebrate his birthday when the fatal incident occurred at Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille on Thursday, July 23, 2026, according to WTOL 11 and Fox 8.
According to the news outlets, first responders discovered Rob, father of four, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Lifesaving efforts were administered, but officers failed to save Rob, and he died on the scene. The shooter was identified as Colton Smith, 21, of Brownstown, Michigan.
Ottawa County public arrest records show that Smith is currently being held on a murder charge with a cash bond set at just over $1 million. Authorities had not released a motive for the crime at the time of filing of this report. According to Fox 8, County Prosecutor James VanEerten said Smith and the victim did not know each other before the shooting. While speaking to WTOL 11, Rob’s sister, Christi Russell, said her brother had gotten up to use the restroom when the fatal incident occurred.
“There was no altercation,” she said, per the outlet. “He was simply enjoying a night out with his wife.” She further stated that her brother and his family spent time on the island every summer. Smith’s preliminary court hearing in Ottawa Municipal Court is scheduled for Friday, July 31, 2026.
Rob’s widow Lindsay Russell established a GoFundMe and called the incident a “senseless act of violence,” further stating that the shooting took place the first day she and her husband arrived on the island for what was meant to be a celebratory weekend.
