New ‘Acting President of Venezuela’ is the world’s most powerful leader, Donald Trump’s Truth Social post after US-Venezuela crisis creates a buzz
In a provocative Truth Social post, Donald Trump declared himself "Acting President of Venezuela" on January 12, 2026. This claim follows a US "large-scale strike" on Caracas, leading to the apprehension of President Maduro and his wife. Trump's a...

Truth Social post
On Sunday, Trump shared an image on Truth Social resembling a modified Wikipedia-style profile that listed him as both the 45th and 47th President of the United States and the “Acting President of Venezuela”, “Incumbent January 2026.” The post also included his portrait and the naming of his US vice president.
The declaration went beyond routine political messaging and was widely circulated online, prompting debate over its meaning and legal status. There is no official record or legal basis, whether in Venezuelan law, international law, or US policy, that the US president holds a constitutional or internationally recognized title as Venezuela’s acting president.
Trump’s Truth Social image followed his repeated statements that the United States would “run Venezuela until a safe, proper and judicious transition” can occur, effectively placing US interests at the center of interim governance.
He has framed these actions as protecting Venezuelan stability and ensuring that oil resources are handled in a way that benefits both Venezuelans and Americans, including plans to import 30 to 50 million barrels of oil for sale on the global market under US control.
US intervention in Venezuela
The Truth Social post comes against the backdrop of what Washington has described as a military and legal offensive against Venezuela. On January 3, 2026, US forces conducted a “large-scale strike” on Caracas, during which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores were taken into US custody and flown to New York to face indictment on narco-terrorism and narcotics trafficking charges. The Trump administration asserted that the operation was conducted in part to prosecute alleged criminal activity and to destabilize Maduro’s government, which has long been at odds with US policy.
Following Maduro’s removal, Delcy Rodríguez, who had served as Venezuela’s vice president and oil minister, was sworn in by the country’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice as interim president on January 5, 2026.
In this context, Trump’s self-designation appeared to signal Washington’s asserted role in Venezuela’s political transition and control over state assets, especially its oil industry, during the interim period.
Global political ripples
Trump’s post and the broader Venezuelan intervention have generated reactions around the world. Analysts note that Trump’s approach extends beyond traditional diplomatic pressure to assert direct influence over another nation’s political leadership and natural resources, a stance few governments have endorsed publicly. The move is unfolding in the context of US efforts to reshape hemispheric policy and reassert influence over Latin America, drawing comparisons to historical doctrines of regional dominance, albeit in a uniquely assertive modern form.
