Nancy Guthrie Case: Why investigators giving no official updates on Savannah Guthrie’s mother’s abduction? Ex-FBI agent gives fresh theory
The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, has reached 100 days with no arrests. Authorities suspect abduction from her Tucson home on January 31, 2026, despite significant rew...

Nancy disappeared from her Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31, 2026, and was reported missing by her family on February 1, 2026. Later, as the investigation went on, investigators believed that Nancy was taken away from her residence against her will and suspected that she was abducted.
Since the time Nancy vanished, several former FBI agents and detectives have offered theories suspecting what might have transpired on the night when Savannah Guthrie’s mother disappeared and tried to dissect the mindset and purpose of the alleged abductors.
No public updates on Nancy Guthrie can be a ‘strategic’ move
Although the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has not conducted a live briefing since February 5, former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Scott Augenbaum said the absence of public updates is often a deliberate and strategic investigative strategy and should not be interpreted as a sign that the case has lost momentum.
“There are primary case agents that their [sic] sole responsibility is to see this case through,” Augenbaum said, as quoted by CBS-affiliate KOLD 13 News (KOLD-TV). “We’re probably not going to really hear much until somebody is indicted. You don’t want to tip off the hands of the suspect. If the suspect’s out there now, you don’t even want them to think anything is going on.”
Kash Patel vs Sheriff Chris Nanos
Last week, FBI Director Kash Patel criticized the Pima County Sheriff’s Department over its speed in involving the federal probe agency in the investigation and questioned the decision to send evidence to laboratories in Florida rather than the FBI lab in Quantico.
In response to Patel’s claims, Sheriff Chris Nanos said that the FBI had been promptly notified by both the sheriff’s department and the Guthrie family, further stating that the laboratory used by the department and the FBI lab in Quantico worked closely together from the beginning and continue to collaborate on evidence analysis.

Within a few days, investigators suspected an abduction, believing that she had been taken from her home against her will around 2:30 a.m. on February 1, 2026. In April 2026, a private forensic lab in Florida sent a hair sample to the FBI for more advanced analysis.
The mystery surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains unsolved, and no suspect has been arrested despite rewards exceeding $1 million and hundreds of leads.
