Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s ‘Today’ show anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared during early hours on February 1, 2026 and was reported missing by her family members. An investigation into the alleged abduction was launched by the Pima County Sheriff's Department, later joined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Authorities soon established that Nancy had been taken from her home against her will.
Despite searching large stretches of land in the area known as Mariposa, located northwest of Nogales, at specific points provided by an anonymous tipster to Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, leader of the Buscando Corazones collective, regarding the location of a suspected clandestine grave containing the remains of Nancy Guthrie, it was not possible to locate it.
On June 9, 2026, more than 50 people took part in the third search for Nancy Guthrie carried out that day, including volunteer searchers, the National Guard, State Police, AMIC agents, the Search Commission, Municipal Civil Protection, Municipal Police, and university criminology students, according to Mexican Spanish-language outlet El Imparcial. According to the collective’s leader, a third anonymous phone call was received informing them that they had come close to finding the remains of the 84-year-old woman during the search conducted on Tuesday, June 9, prompting intensified efforts in the area.
Ayala Ortiz said the anonymous caller told them that the grave where Nancy Guthrie was allegedly buried was located beneath a grove of trees near one of the streams in the area, close to the site where 25 clandestine graves and the remains of more than 30 buried individuals were discovered between April and May 2026.
With more specific new information and four times as many people involved in the search, a positive result was expected. However, after eight continuous hours of searching, the alleged grave could not be found. The Nogales collective leader revealed that three anonymous calls have been received regarding Nancy Guthrie’s case. However, despite receiving specific details about the grave’s location, the area to be searched remains vast.
“Because it is such a large area of land with several streams, we need to survey and inspect each location that matches the characteristics described by the anonymous source. We are gathering more information and hope to resume the search soon,” Ayala Ortiz said.
Furthermore, Ayala Ortiz said it is extremely important for relatives of U.S. citizen Nancy Guthrie to provide a DNA sample to the State Attorney General’s Office, as it can be compared with the dozens of human remains already recovered that have not yet been identified.
