Blizzard warnings issued as Northeast US snowstorm forces millions indoors
A powerful winter storm named Fernando unleashed heavy snow, ice and high winds across the US Northeast and Midwest, causing widespread tourism disruptions, flight cancellations and hazardous travel conditions. The storm struck during a busy travel period, leaving thousands of visitors stranded and snarling operations in major cities including New York City, Chicago and Atlanta.

Winter Storm Fernando brought significant snow accumulations, reports indicate up to 12 to 24 inches in affected regions, with blizzard conditions reducing visibility and paralyzing transportation networks. Tourism infrastructure in key urban centers faced severe setbacks as ice-covered roads, buried sidewalks and flight cancellations discouraged travel and forced closures of attractions.

In New York City, Central Park received nearly 19 inches of snow, one of the heaviest single storms in the season, while nearby areas such as Rhode Island saw even greater accumulations.

These conditions forced local authorities to impose travel advisories and close certain roads to non-essential traffic, affecting both residents and visitors.

Flights canceled and delayed

The scale of aviation disruption has been unprecedented. According to flight tracking service FlightAware, over 5,600 flights were canceled nationwide on Monday as the storm peaked, affecting major Northeast hubs.

An additional over 2,000 cancellations occurred by Tuesday as conditions slowly improved.

Combined totals suggest tens of thousands of flight delays and cancellations across the multi-day event, with airlines activating waivers so passengers can rebook or refund their tickets without fees.

Major airports bore the brunt of the storm:

  • New York City (JFK and LaGuardia) saw cancellation rates near total shutdowns on Monday.
  • Boston Logan International Airport reported roughly 90% of departures canceled.
  • Newark Liberty (EWR) also saw cancellations above 90%.
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) experienced hundreds of cancellations and major delays.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) reported dozens of cancellations and delays linked to system-wide disruptions.
These cancellations often rippled through airline networks, as grounded aircraft and crews disrupted flight schedules even in cities outside the storm’s direct path.

Major cities affected

Here are the primary cities reporting severe impacts from Winter Storm Fernando and its associated travel chaos:

  • New York City (NYC): Heavy snow and ice disrupted road travel and tourism. Major attractions scaled back operations as transportation and safety risks grew.
  • Boston (MA): Record snowfall shut down roads and transit, contributing to regional travel paralysis.
  • Providence (RI): Snowfall exceeded three feet in parts, making travel extremely difficult.
  • Hartford (CT) and Other Northeast Cities: Widespread snow and icy conditions led to school closures, transit shutdowns and emergency declarations.
  • Philadelphia: Measured 14 inches of snow, pushing the city’s seasonal total to 30 inches and ranking this winter as the 15th snowiest on record.

Safety and recovery

In response to the storm, state and local authorities issued blizzard warnings, travel advisories and emergency declarations across multiple states. Snow-clearing crews were deployed en masse to keep arterial roads passable, while airlines issued waivers allowing passengers to rebook or request refunds without penalties as they worked to recover schedules.

As of today, conditions are improving in many areas, but officials caution that residual snow, power outages and flight disruptions are likely to persist as the region digests one of the winter’s most intense storms.
