Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will remain closed on Monday after deteriorating weather conditions from Sunday’s snowfall prompted officials to reverse an earlier decision for a delayed opening. School authorities said a planned two-hour delay was scrapped after reports showed greater-than-expected snow and ice accumulation, particularly in upcounty areas of Montgomery County. The district later issued a Code Red, announcing a full closure for Monday, February 23.

“Although we announced a delayed opening for 2/23, worsening conditions and greater-than-expected accumulation have made it unsafe to open schools, even with a delay,” MCPS said in an update posted on social media.

With schools closed, the district confirmed that, as noted by the Banner:

  • Child care programs and community-use activities are canceled
  • All school-based activities, including field trips, athletic practices, and events, are canceled
  • Emergency personnel are still expected to report to school facilities
County officials said the snowfall is not expected to significantly impact travel south and west of Interstate 495, but warned that dangerous road conditions are likely across much of the rest of the county due to lingering snow and ice.

Authorities urged residents to exercise caution and limit travel where possible as cleanup operations continue.
