Missouri Crime News: Foster mother accused of trading child for monkey avoids jail time despite multiple charges

A former Missouri foster caregiver linked to an alleged child-for-monkey exchange will avoid serving time behind bars after a circuit judge opted to suspend her seven-year prison term. According to reports from FOX 2 and the Lincoln County Journal, Lincoln County Judge Thomas Frawley handed down the seven-year sentence to Brenda Deutsch for child endangerment.

However, Frawley suspended the execution of the penalty, placing Deutsch on three years of state-monitored probation instead. The judge additionally canceled her foster-parenting authorization, enforced mandatory counseling, and characterized her actions as "reprehensible."

Court documentation accessed by PEOPLE indicates Deutsch entered a guilty plea on June 15, 2026, to a first-degree charge of endangering the welfare of a child. In exchange, two secondary counts alleging child neglect or abuse were dismissed under her plea deal.


The charge to which she pleaded guilty involved knowingly putting the young girl at substantial risk by sending her off to live without supervision in a filthy Texas home, according to legal documents cited by PEOPLE. Authorities with Texas Child Protective Services ultimately stepped in to rescue the minor.

Addressing the courtroom during sentencing, Judge Frawley clarified that the conviction pertained narrowly to the Texas living situation. "She did not abuse anyone, engage in patterns of abusive behaviors, trade a child for a monkey, or anything else that has been said," Frawley stated, as cited by the Lincoln County Journal.

In a separate legal matter, Deutsch faces three counts of forgery alongside one charge of stealing, court files obtained by PEOPLE and First Alert 4 reveal. State investigators with the Missouri Department of Social Services allege in a probable cause filing that Deutsch fraudulently collected $962.50 in state funds by turning in fake invoices for unperformed respite-care assistance.
