‘Minnesota has to come first’: Why Tim Walz is stepping away from the 2026 Minnesota governor’s race
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has announced he will not run for a third term. He stated his focus must be on governing the state and addressing fraud allegations. Walz believes campaigning would detract from his duties. He also criticized political ...

In a social media post, Walz said he was proud of his administration’s work to “make Minnesota the best place to live and raise kids” before confirming that he was stepping away from the 2026 governor’s race. “I’ve decided to step out of the race and let others worry about the election while I focus on the work,” Walz said.
Along with the announcement, Walz shared a four-page statement that was sharply critical of President Trump and his policies, accusing him and his allies of targeting Minnesota.
“Donald Trump and his allies – in Washington, in Saint Paul, and online – want to make our state a colder, meaner place,” Walz said, adding, “They’ve already begun by taking our tax dollars that were meant to help families afford child care.”
Why Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will not run for a third term
In the 4-page New Year message to Minnesotans, Walz said the state is at a critical moment and requires his full, undivided attention as governor.
Focus on governing, not campaigning
Walz acknowledged that he believed he could win a third term if he ran, but said campaigning would take time and energy away from governing. “Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota,” Walz said.
He added that Minnesota’s challenges in 2026 leave little room for political distractions. “I can’t give a political campaign my all,” he said, explaining that his priority is addressing real-time issues rather than electioneering.
Fraud crisis cited as key reason
The governor pointed to widespread fraud targeting state-funded programs as a central concern, saying the issue has eroded public trust and demands decisive leadership. “A single taxpayer dollar wasted on fraud is a dollar too much to tolerate,” Walz said.
He outlined steps his administration has already taken, including cutting off funding streams, firing staff, pursuing criminal charges, and hiring a new head of program integrity.
Criticism of Republican politics and Washington leadership
‘Minnesota has to come first’
Walz framed his decision as one rooted in public service rather than ambition, saying his role is to govern through a difficult period, not campaign. “I didn’t run for this job so I could have this job. I ran for this job so I could do this job,” he said.
He added that stepping aside comes with “zero sadness and zero regret.”
Apart from his listed reasons for being out of the race, social media commentary suggested another reason behind his exit. Nick Shirley, the YouTuber who exposed the alleged daycare fraud in Minnesota, believes he’s the reason Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is not seeking a third term, according to his x post.
Walz has served as Minnesota’s governor since January 2019 and has led the state through several major crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread unrest following the death of George Floyd in May 2020.
