Miami International Airport flights delayed after Amazon cargo plane crash - What travelers need to know and how to check your flight status

Travelers flying through Miami International Airport should expect significant disruptions after an Amazon cargo plane crashed while landing Sunday (September 6). The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air for Amazon, overran a runway after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and struck several vehicles before catching fire. At least five people were killed and five others were injured, with three of the injured reported in critical condition. The crash prompted a temporary ground stop that halted arrivals and departures while emergency crews responded. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were sent to the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the Amazon Prime Air flight overran the airport's diagonal runway at about 2 PM local time. The aircraft came to rest near the airport after hitting multiple vehicles, according to local officials. Video footage and images from the scene showed the damaged aircraft near the runway as emergency crews worked to contain the fire. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident. Officials have not yet determined what caused the aircraft to leave the runway.

The ground stop was lifted after roughly three hours, and two of the airport's four runways had reopened by Sunday evening. However, significant disruptions continued. As of late Sunday night, the FAA reported average arrival delays of about 6 hours and 24 minutes, while AP reported that more than 160 flights had been canceled and nearly 325 delayed by late Sunday.
