Earlier in the evening, travelers were evacuated from parts of Miami International Airport after a “suspicious item” was discovered in the South Terminal, prompting a swift security response. According to airport officials, TSA security checkpoints serving concourses G, H, and J, along with surrounding areas, were evacuated and temporarily closed while the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident.
Footage shared by Detaxify showed passengers disembarking from a Swiss International Air Lines flight arriving from Zurich and waiting on the tarmac as the Miami airport evacuation was underway.
Other videos of Miami airport also showed a large number of people gathered, which seems to be outside the airport area.
Earlier reports from NBC Miami citing the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the evacuation was triggered by "unattended luggage" found inside the terminal.
In a series of updates posted on X, Miami International Airport said the sheriff’s office later gave the all-clear. “The @MiamiDade_SO has given the all clear, and the TSA checkpoints for concourses G, H, and J and the surrounding areas are being reopened,” the airport authority said.
However, social media users reacted pretty harshly to the airport’s comments, which they seemed to think was not the complete information about what happened. One user wrote on X, “I guess we will have to wait and see if the truth comes out. I can't see why they would cover it up so lets wait and see…’
Before the reopening, Miami airport cautioned travelers about residual delays. “Concourses H and J are currently experiencing a temporary security screening process at MIA. Travelers may see a brief delay,” Miami International Airport said, thanking passengers for their patience.
