Malcolm-Jamal Warner's widow Tenisha, who never had a fight with him in 10 years, sues his mother over prenup dispute on death anniversary

Tenisha Warner, the widow of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, has filed a lawsuit against her mother-in-law, Pamela Warner, over a dispute involving the late actor's prenuptial agreement and alleged unpaid debts from his family trust. In the complaint, Tenisha is seeking more than $1.2 million in compensation, alleging that several financial benefits promised to her during their marriage were never fulfilled.

According to a complaint first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the lawsuit was filed in DeKalb County Superior Court on Monday, the first anniversary of Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025, when the Cosby Show actor tragically drowned during a family vacation. He was 54.

Court documents state that under the prenuptial agreement signed before the couple's 2017 marriage, Warner agreed to provide his wife with a number of financial benefits. Those obligations reportedly included obtaining a $1 million life insurance policy naming her as the sole beneficiary, paying her $5,000 per month for serving as his “chief of staff,” providing an annual $16,000 anniversary payment, funding a tax-free retirement account in her name, and maintaining college funds for their children.


According to the complaint, several of those commitments were never carried out before the actor's death. Tenisha is now seeking to recover those alleged obligations from Warner's estate, which court filings estimate is worth between $3.4 million and $6 million. She is also asking the court to bar Pamela Warner, who serves as trustee of the family trust, from distributing any trust assets until the legal dispute has been resolved.

Pamela Warner has not yet responded to the lawsuit. However, on the anniversary of her son's death, she shared a heartfelt tribute on social media that appeared to foreshadow the family's latest legal battle.

Posting on Malcolm-Jamal Warner's living legacy Instagram page, she described the past year as “amazing how a year of pain, hurt, loss, emotional destabilizaton, and most importantly growth, has come and sits here before me.”

“I am a firm believer that everything has a purpose and a reason. Some of it is Karma, some of it is one’s journey. I believe there is always a lesson in unpleasant and pleasant experience,” she wrote.

“During my year long journey, I have discovered how cruel, evil and greedy a human can be. I have also discovered the depth of love, care, concern and support that humans are capable of. All of which I have been the recipient of. The good, the bad and the ugly. These are the lessons that apparently I will need as I continue my journey,” Pamela added without naming anyone in the post.

Who is Tenisha Warner, wife of Malcolm-Jamal Warner?

Although Malcolm-Jamal Warner largely kept his family life away from the spotlight, his wife publicly revealed her identity two months after his death in 2025. Sharing a wedding photograph on Instagram to mark what would have been their anniversary, Tenisha thanked supporters who had stood by the family during their grief.

“Thank you for holding us in so much love during this tender time,” she wrote. “Tomorrow marks our anniversary — and my heart is wide open. For the first time, I’m sharing a glimpse of the love that began it all. I can still hear my husband’s laugh, still feel the way he made room for every part of me — every tear, every dream.”

The couple married in 2017 and had one daughter, who was 8 years old when Malcolm died. In the same post, Tenisha announced the launch of River + Ember, along with The Warner Family Foundation, an organization that supports young artists between the ages of 14 and 22 through scholarship opportunities.

How Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Tenisha Warner met

Years before their marriage, Malcolm revealed that romance was the last thing on either of their minds when they first met.

Writing on Instagram in April 2021, the actor recalled being introduced to Tenisha through a mutual friend. Their first date, he admitted, was far from a typical love-at-first-sight moment because neither of them expected the relationship to become serious.

He said it seemed “pretty clear that this was not going to become anything other than maybe a cool friendship.” At the time, they also had very different plans for the future. Tenisha wanted to become a parent, while Malcolm had already decided that raising a family was not part of the next chapter of his life.

“We were clear we were on different pages,” Malcolm wrote. “And we were good. I had already decided the next chapters of my life would be about something bigger than family. 5 1/2 months later I was the one who asked, ‘So, how would you feel about starting a family?’ ”

Rather than rushing into a relationship, the couple chose to spend more time getting to know each other before taking the next step.

“We took more time to experience each other to make [sure] it was more than a cool concept,” he said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I envision that a few years later I’d be making my very first cake with the help of the beautiful manifestation of our love, who is truly our ‘mini us.’ ”

'We never had a fight,' Malcolm-Jamal Warner said months before his death

Just weeks before his death, Malcolm spoke publicly about his marriage, describing Tenisha as his "soulmate" and crediting their relationship to the fact that they found each other later in life.

During a May 2025 appearance on the Hot & Bothered podcast, the actor said that despite spending nearly a decade together, they had never experienced a major argument.

“We’ve been together almost 10 years and we have never had a fight, an argument, a raised voice or a harsh word said to one another. ... And it’s not like we agree on everything,” he said.


Explaining why their relationship worked, he added, “I think because we met later in life, we’ve just always been at a point where we have a way of communicating like adults.”
