Lou Koller, frontman for Sick of It All who inspired CM Punk's iconic WWE entrance, has died

Lou Koller, the longtime frontman of New York hardcore band Sick of It All and the musician whose signature catchphrase inspired CM Punk's iconic WWE entrance, has died at 59 after a battle with adenocarcinoma cancer. CM Punk was among the first to pay tribute following the announcement, honoring the singer whose music had been part of his life for decades.

"Love you Lou and SOIA. Thank you for the soundtrack for my life. Sending hugs. Tonight's 'clobberin' time' is for Lou."

For wrestling fans, Koller's influence extends far beyond the hardcore music scene. Every time CM Punk walks to the ring, drops to one knee and shouts "It's clobberin' time!", he is paying tribute to Koller.


The phrase originated in Sick of It All's 1989 song "Clobberin' Time," where Koller delivered the opening line that Punk later adopted as his signature entrance, introducing generations of WWE fans to the band's legacy.

Sick of It All announces Lou Koller's death

The band confirmed Koller's death in a heartfelt statement shared on social media on Friday, July 24. "It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller."

The band remembered Koller as "a beloved friend and an iconic frontman," adding that his passion, humour and dedication never faded throughout nearly 40 years of performing. They also thanked fans around the world who donated to his medical fund, saying the support made Koller feel "very special and very loved" during his fight against cancer.

Lou Koller revealed cancer diagnosis in 2024

In June 2024, Koller announced that doctors had discovered a tumour in his oesophagus that had extended into his stomach. The diagnosis forced him to step away from touring to undergo treatment.

His brother and guitarist Pete Koller later launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses, writing at the time: "My big brother, Lou, has been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma cancer."

Lou and Pete Koller formed Sick of It All in Queens, New York, in 1986 alongside drummer Armand Majidi. The band released its debut album, Blood, Sweat and No Tears, in 1989 and became one of the defining acts of the New York hardcore movement through relentless touring and influential releases. Bassist Craig Setari joined in 1993, and the band's most recent album, Wake the Sleeping Dragon!, arrived in 2018.
