Following the incident, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was called to the 99 Ranch Market in the city's Westwood neighborhood just after 12 PM local time on Thursday, February 5, 2026, according to local news outlets The Los Angeles Times, KTLA, and ABC7.
According to ABC 7, the driver was identified as an elderly woman, the LAFD said. She hit a cyclist as she was driving on Westwood Boulevard about one block before crashing into the store. The driver is cooperating with investigators and is undergoing a medical evaluation, AP reported, citing officials at the scene.
The crash reportedly occurred at 12:11 p.m. on Westwood Boulevard and Rochester Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The driver struck a bicyclist and then continued down the road and crashed into the 99 Ranch Market.
Car crash victim identified
The three victims killed in the crash were identified as a 42-year-old woman, a 55-year-old man, and a 30-year-old man, according to ABC 7 and KTLA. They were reportedly inside the store's bakery when the vehicle crashed, per ABC7.
2 patients were in serious condition, says LAFD
LAFD issued an update just before 2 PM. According to news agency AP, the subsequent incident report from the fire department stated that four people were taken to hospitals. Out of the four, two were in serious condition and two sustained minor injuries. Two other people declined transport against medical advice.
Cause of the crash
As a part of the investigation, authorities are trying to determine what led to the crash, including whether the driver suffered a medical issue, Lantz said. Los Angeles Police Department officers were on scene trying to piece together the circumstances as of Thursday evening.
"This does not seem to be of any ill intent," Scott said, adding that the incident "does not seem to be an intentional act but rather is being investigated, so far, as an accidental traffic collision."
The city's Department of Building and Safety responded to the scene and is set to assess the stability of the structure, though the car seemingly primarily hit the building's windows, Lantz said, PEOPLE reported, citing the Times.
LAFD and LAPD were on the scene
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, in a statement shared to Facebook, said that LAFD and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) are still on the scene, and the Mayor's Office Crisis Response team is set to offer support and resources.
"My heart is with the victims, their families, and all who were impacted by the deadly crash at the 99 Ranch Market in Westwood this afternoon," Bass wrote. "I want to thank our first responders who acted immediately to respond to this emergency and render critical aid."
"I'm asking all Angelenos to avoid the area as the investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing," she added.
