Long Island Railroad (LIRR), the nations largest commuter train system
On May 16, 2026, workers for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), North America’s busiest commuter rail system, walked off the job after contract negotiations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) failed, bringing rail service between Long Island and New York City to an abrupt halt. The strike, the first shutdown in more than three decades, has left approximately 250,000-300,000 daily commuters searching for alternative ways to travel into Manhattan and beyond amid what officials describe as a potentially prolonged disruption.

Alternative options for how to travel during the LIRR strike

Service on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is suspended due to a strike, affecting nearly 300,000 daily riders. If you can, work from home. If you must travel, here are the clearest, practical alternatives the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is providing.

Free shuttle buses (Peak hours only)

  • Shuttle buses run on weekdays during peak hours.
  • Toward Manhattan: 4:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • Toward Long Island: 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • The shuttle service is free.
  • Use OMNY, phone, or card when transferring to subways or MTA buses.
Routes available:

  • Bay Shore LIRR to Howard Beach–JFK Airport subway station (A train)
  • Hempstead Lake State Park near Lakeview LIRR to Howard Beach–JFK Airport (A train)
  • Hicksville LIRR to Howard Beach–JFK Airport (A train)
  • Mineola LIRR to Howard Beach–JFK Airport (A train)
  • Huntington LIRR to Jamaica–179 St at Hillside Avenue (F train)
  • Ronkonkoma LIRR to Jamaica–179 St at Hillside Avenue (F train)
Some of these routes also have limited reverse-peak service.

NICE Bus to reach the subway

  • Nassau County riders can use Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE Bus) routes that travel into Queens.
  • These buses connect to major subway stations including:
    • 179 St (E and F trains)
    • Flushing–Main St (7 train)
    • Far Rockaway–Mott Av (A train)
    • Jamaica Center–Parsons/Archer (E, J, Z trains)
    • Jamaica Bus Terminal near 169 St (F train)
  • Riders can tap and ride using OMNY, phone, or bank card.
Passenger drop-off points (No parking available)

  • If someone can drop you off, use subway stations located near major roads from Long Island:
    • Far Rockaway–Mott Av (A train)
    • Kew Gardens–Union Tpke (E and F trains)
    • Ozone Park–Lefferts Blvd (A train)
    • Sheepshead Bay (B and Q trains)
    • Woodhaven Blvd (J train)
  • Do not plan to park at these stations.
Important tips for commuters

  • Expect heavy road congestion and crowded subway platforms.
  • Leave much earlier than usual.
  • Monthly LIRR ticket holders for May are expected to receive prorated refunds for strike days, pending approval.

Why the LIRR strike happened

The strike began at 12:01 am on May 16 after five labor unions representing around 3,500 LIRR workers failed to secure a deal with the MTA on wage increases and work rules. The dispute centred on compensation levels for the fourth year of a contract, with unions advocating for larger raises than the MTA was willing to offer.

Prior mediation efforts, including presidential emergency boards appointed by the federal government, were unable to produce a binding agreement.

As a result of the work stoppage, all LIRR rail services have been suspended indefinitely, and the critical commuter link that connects Long Island communities, suburban workers, and New York City has fallen silent.
