Air Canada Express jet hits ground vehicle, closing New York's LaGuardia airport
A sudden “aircraft emergency” at LaGuardia Airport prompted US aviation authorities to issue a temporary ground stop, halting flight operations at one of America’s busiest domestic travel hubs.

According to initial reports, the incident involved an Air Canada Express aircraft that collided with a ground vehicle upon landing, triggering immediate safety protocols. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded by suspending departures and arrivals until 0530 GMT, according to Reuters.

While full operational details are still emerging, such ground stops are typically imposed to prevent further congestion and allow emergency crews to clear the affected area.

Passenger impact of LaGuardia Airport ground stop

The disruption at LaGuardia is likely to have impacted tens of thousands of passengers, given the airport’s scale and daily traffic volume.

LaGuardia handled around 30-40 million passengers in 2025, averaging roughly over 90,000 travelers per day.

The airport handles more than 400 flights daily, averaging around 16 flights every hour, according to Fly BLADE.

Given these figures, even a brief shutdown during peak hours can disrupt not only passengers at LaGuardia but also connecting travelers across the US aviation network.

Casualties reported in the LaGuardia aircraft taxiway collision

As of the latest available information, there have reportedly been multiple injuries and few fatalities linked to the aircraft emergency, though there is no official confirmation.

What a ground stop means for air traffic

A ground stop is a critical air traffic control measure that prevents aircraft from taking off toward a specific airport until conditions are deemed safe. It effectively freezes departures across the network for flights bound for that location, often creating ripple effects nationwide.

Even short-duration ground stops can lead to cascading delays, aircraft repositioning issues, and crew scheduling disruptions, especially at high-density airports like LaGuardia.
