FAA orders emergency ground stop at laguardia airport
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for all incoming flights at the airport, citing an emergency situation. The restriction, which began shortly after midnight local time, was initially scheduled to remain in place until 1:30 a.m., though officials indicated there was a “high probability of an extension,” according to a notice reported by Reuters.
In a separate advisory to airmen, the FAA suggested that operations at the airport could remain affected for several hours, as per the news agency.
Reports of injuries, details still emerging
Reports circulating on social media cited by the Jerusalem Post suggest that the aircraft, a CRJ-900 operating under Air Canada Express, may have collided with a fire truck on the runway.
According to the outlet, several people were injured in the incident, including five firefighters, with some believed to be in critical condition. There are also unverified claims of possible fatalities.
The incident has led to significant disruption for flights across the U.S. and Canada, with incoming services to LaGuardia temporarily halted.
This is a developing story.
