Japanese horror novelist Suzuki Koji dies at 68
Renowned Japanese novelist Koji Suzuki, best known for creating the internationally influential horror novel Ring (Ringu), has died at the age of 68. Suzuki passed away on May 8, 2026, at a hospital in Tokyo, Japan, following an illness. He was born on May 13, 1957, in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Koji Suzuki’s name became synonymous with modern Japanese horror after the release of Ring in 1991. The novel introduced readers to a psychological form of dread that blended folklore, technology, and existential fear, most famously embodied by the character Sadako Yamamura, who would go on to become one of global horror’s most recognizable figures.

Ring not only achieved major success in literary circles but also served as the foundation for an expansive multimedia franchise, including films, television series, manga, and video games.

His breakthrough with Ring helped spark the J-Horror boom, a cultural moment in the late 1990s and early 2000s when Japanese horror, with its distinctive psychological terror and folklore-rooted villains, captured worldwide attention.

The 1998 Japanese film adaptation Ringu, directed by Hideo Nakata, became a pivotal influence on the genre and was followed by both domestic sequels and international remakes, including the 2002 American version The Ring.

Suzuki’s career began in 1990 with the novel Paradise (Rakuen). He continued to expand the Ring universe with sequels such as Spiral (1995) and Loop (1998), as well as later installments like S and Tide.

Beyond Ring, Suzuki wrote a range of novels and short stories spanning horror, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction. His 1996 collection Dark Water (Honogurai mizu no soko kara) was adapted into both Japanese and American films.

He received numerous literary honors over his career, including the Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Award for Spiral and the Shirley Jackson Award for Edge in the United States, as well as the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.

Suzuki is survived by family members and a global community of readers and creators who continue to engage with his stories.
