Kiki Shepard, the poised and enduring face of Showtime at the Apollo for more than a decade, has died at 74 after a sudden heart attack, closing a career that helped shape one of television’s most influential platforms for Black performers.

According to the Washington Informer website, her representative, LaShirl Smith, confirmed the death, describing it as sudden and unexpected in a statement.

“We all knew her from Showtime At The Apollo,” said Roland Martin, who recalled her warmth and energy. “She was a legend! RIP, Kiki.”

Born in July 1951 in Tyler, Texas, Chiquita Renee Shepard started her career as a professional dancer, performing on international stages and appearing at New York’s Delacourt Summer Shakespeare Festival in 1976.

Before gaining national recognition, Shepard studied at Howard University, where her early training with the DC Repertory Dance Company helped shape a disciplined career in performance that later reached audiences nationwide.

According to the Celebrity Networth website, her networth stands at $2 million.

Shepard became a household name during her 1987–2002 run on Showtime at the Apollo, as the Apollo Theater showcase spotlighted emerging Black talent. Shepard, dubbed the “Apollo Queen of Fashion,” became known for her elegance and presence, commanding a demanding audience.

According to Washington Informer website, Shepard also built a wide-ranging screen career, appearing in series such as A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue, Family Law, and Grey’s Anatomy, alongside film roles in A Rage in Harlem, Miss Evers’ Boys, Dolls of Voodoo, and Blackjack Christmas.

TV personality Elgin Charles remembered her as “more than a cultural icon… she was my sister in spirit.”
