Kathleen Boucher and Gerard Boucher, beloved Cape Cod couple, fall through thin ice during Valentine’s Day morning dog walk and die; their 6-decade-old love story meets a tragic end
A couple died tragically on Cape Cod after falling through ice on Valentine's Day. Gerard and Kathleen Boucher, married for 50 years, were walking their dog when the incident occurred. Rescue efforts faced dangerous conditions due to shifting ice ...

Authorities say the incident happened on the morning of February 14 in Eastham, Massachusetts, near First Encounter Beach and Bee’s River. Police responded around 9:07 am after reports of a distressed dog alone in a parking lot. When officers arrived, they heard a woman screaming for help from the icy water.
Rescue attempts quickly escalated into a dangerous operation. Two police officers attempting to help also fell through the ice before managing to reach safety and were hospitalized.
Divers later recovered the woman’s body from the frigid water. The search for her husband continued with drones, divers, and shoreline patrols but was later suspended due to hazardous ice conditions.
The victims were identified as Kathleen “Kit” Boucher, 71, and Gerard “Jerry” Boucher, 72, a devoted couple who had been together since their teenage years.
Friends and family described them as deeply loving partners who had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
The pair met as teenagers and built a life centered on family, community, and volunteering. They are survived by two daughters and six grandchildren.
The Bouchers were well-known in their community for their generosity and active lifestyle. Kit Boucher was a retired kindergarten teacher and longtime volunteer in animal rescue efforts. Jerry Boucher previously worked for Connecticut Natural Gas and remained active in retirement.
Neighbors described the couple as warm, kind, and devoted to their family and community.
They had lived in the Eastham area for years and frequently walked local beaches with their black Labrador, Casey, who survived the incident.
What authorities believe happened
Investigators believe the tragedy may have begun when their dog ventured onto unstable ice. Community members speculate Jerry may have gone onto the ice to help, leading to both falling through.Saltwater and tidal ice is particularly dangerous because it forms unevenly and can break suddenly due to currents underneath. Rescue operations were repeatedly halted due to shifting ice and incoming tides that threatened the safety of divers.
The Eastham community has been deeply shaken by the loss. Memorials appeared along the shoreline, and friends described the couple as “very loving” and inseparable.
Their daughter publicly thanked first responders and community members for their support, saying the family is devastated but grateful for the outpouring of compassion.
