Juneteenth 2026: Where and how NYC, Southern California and Central Illinois are celebrating the federal holiday

Juneteenth celebrations are taking place across the United States this week, with communities marking the federal holiday through food festivals, parades, concerts, educational programs, film screenings, and family-friendly events. Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

New York City: Juneteenth celebrations across five boroughs

New Yorkers have no shortage of ways to celebrate Juneteenth in 2026. One of the largest events is the fifth annual Juneteenth Food Festival at Brooklyn's Weeksville Heritage Center, where more than 30 Black-owned food vendors are serving dishes ranging from Southern fried catfish and Haitian patties to Nigerian suya.


Food-focused celebrations continue throughout the city, including a community cookout in Prospect Park and a Juneteenth Farmers Market Celebration at the James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center in the Bronx, featuring local produce, cooking demonstrations, yoga sessions, and community performances.

Film and cultural programming also play a central role in this year's observance. In Queens, the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is screening The Inkwell, a beloved film celebrating Black life and family.

Brooklyn's Sankofa Cinema Club is hosting a Juneteenth double feature highlighting African American and Afro-Dominican history, while Manhattan's Movies Under The Stars series will present Harriet, the acclaimed film about abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

Family-oriented celebrations include storytelling and music performances at Flushing Town Hall, a freedom-themed gathering at Brooklyn Children's Museum, a Juneteenth parade and festival in Staten Island's Tappen Park, and Harlem's 33rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration NYC, which features a parade, live entertainment, and a street fair along 116th Street.

Southern California

Across Southern California, Juneteenth celebrations are bringing together music, education, and community engagement.

One of the region's headline events is a special Juneteenth concert at the Hollywood Bowl featuring three-time Grammy Award winner Chance the Rapper, marking his return to the iconic venue for the first time since 2017.

In Orange County, the Irvine Juneteenth Celebration will feature live music, dance performances, food vendors, a wellness lounge, a children's village, and a marketplace highlighting BIPOC-owned businesses.

Santa Ana and Culver City are also hosting family-friendly celebrations with live entertainment, cultural activities, and community resource booths.

Several events focus on education and historical reflection. Riverside's Civil Rights Institute is organizing a free celebration featuring interactive exhibits, children's activities, and performances exploring the role of music in Black history.

Meanwhile, town Disney's Yardfest will celebrate the traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities with drumline performances and appearances by Disney characters.

Additional festivities include Pasadena's fifth annual Roller Jam, Manhattan Beach's Juneteenth concert, a Freedom Day cycling tour through historic African American sites in Los Angeles, and a Juneteenth weekend celebration at the California African American Museum.

Central Illinois

Communities throughout Central Illinois are marking Juneteenth with events that emphasize both celebration and historical awareness.

Peoria's calendar includes a self-guided Juneteenth driving tour, open-mic poetry performances, Freedom Fest, and the annual Jubilee Day celebration along the RiverFront. The city will also host the 27th Annual Juneteenth Father's Day Choral Celebration, continuing a long-standing local tradition.

Bloomington-Normal is organizing a Juneteenth Field Day and a community celebration at Miller Park, while Springfield's Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum is hosting educational programs, including a discussion featuring journalist and historian Nikole Hannah-Jones and a literary commemoration exploring the legacy of freedom and emancipation.
