The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent consumer alert for owners of certain Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles, warning them to park their vehicles outside and away from structures due to a potential fire hazard. The recall, announced by FCA US, covers 1,076,999 model year 2021–2025 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles. According to the safety notice, an electrical defect in the power steering system could trigger a fire, even when the vehicle is turned off.

Jeep recall: What is the issue?

According to the Jeep recall summary, the affected vehicles "may have an electrical connection issue in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring." The faulty wiring can overheat, causing nearby combustible materials to ignite. NHTSA said the issue is serious because "the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring may overheat and cause a vehicle fire, even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition in the 'Off' position." The agency warned that "a vehicle fire increases the risk of injury."

Investigation linked to dozens of reported fires

The recall follows an NHTSA investigation that was launched after multiple reports of vehicle fires. According to the agency, it is currently aware of 51 fires and one injury that are likely connected to the defect.
