Most farmers spend a fortune trying to kill gorse. It scratches, spreads fast, and can make land difficult to graze. So when a young botanist named Hugh Wilson became involved in restoring worn-out farmland on New Zealand's Banks Peninsula in the mid-1980s and chose to leave the existing gorse rather than clear it, his approach ran against the usual instinct to remove the weed.

The story is set out in an interview with Wilson published in the journal Ecological Management & Restoration, titled Forest regeneration on Hinewai Reserve, New Zealand: An interview with Hugh Wilson. The land he purchased had been cleared of native forest during European settlement and later farmed until the soil became exhausted.

What was left behind was scrubby, eroded ground slowly filling in with gorse, a spiky yellow-flowered shrub originally introduced from Britain that had become widespread across the region. Everyone around him wanted it sprayed with herbicide or burned. Wilson had a different theory. He believed the gorse wasn't working against the land at all, and that it might actually help bring the forest back.


A weed that became a shelter, not a threat

Gorse grows fast and thick, and that dense growth provides useful shelter almost by accident. It blocks the wind, holds in moisture, and shades the ground beneath it, creating shelter that helps a young native seedling survive its fragile first years rather than being scorched by sun or battered by weather. Birds feeding in the thickets drop seeds from nearby native trees, which settle into the sheltered, damp soil under the gorse and begin to grow.

As the native seedlings grow, the balance gradually shifts. Gorse can dominate open, sunny ground, but the developing native forest creates increasing shade. Native trees continue rising through the scrub while the gorse becomes less able to compete for light. Eventually, the taller native canopy shades the gorse, and the older plants thin and die back. In this way, the shrub that helped shelter the young forest becomes part of the vegetation that the recovering forest replaces.

According to the research paper, undisturbed patches of gorse on the reserve gradually gave way to native broadleaf forest, with species such as mahoe eventually rising above dense stands of yellow-flowered scrub. What began with the formation of the conservation trust and the purchase of land in the mid-1980s eventually grew into Hinewai Reserve, which the 2017 paper describes as a 1,500-hectare regrowth rainforest. The change did not happen quickly, and for a long time the land still looked overrun with weeds rather than recovering. Beneath that surface, the forest was already rebuilding itself.

What this teaches us about patience and land recovery

A weed is often something to remove on sight, and in many situations that is fair advice. But this case shows that not every unwanted plant harms a landscape. Conventional native planting projects can be costly, requiring nursery-grown saplings, planting crews, fencing, and ongoing watering and weeding.

Allowing gorse to do that sheltering work instead costs little beyond patience, with birds handling seed dispersal naturally and the shrub itself providing shelter for free. Ecologists sometimes call this kind of relationship a nurse crop, in which a tough, fast-growing plant protects slower-growing species as they establish.

The approach is not unique to New Zealand, but the reserve described in Wilson's interview stands out as one of the best-documented examples of it working across a large area over a long period. In some cases, scrubby growth is quietly preparing the ground for new forest, and removing it too early can undo years of recovery.

Wilson has continued to manage the reserve, which remains open to the public, with walking tracks running through forest that was once gorse-covered farmland. Visitors can see the process for themselves, with old gorse stems standing bare and grey among younger native trees that have long since grown past them. No spraying or clearing, just years of allowing the weed to help the forest recover.
