According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 6 million feral swine are now found across at least 35 states, while the National Park Service traces the first European introductions to the 1500s, when explorers and settlers brought domestic pigs as a food source. Over time, escaped and released domestic pigs became established in the wild, while later introductions of Eurasian wild boar and subsequent interbreeding added further genetic diversity to feral populations.
Pigs adapted for survival
According to the National Invasive Species Information Centre, European pigs were introduced to what is now the United States in the 1500s as a source of food. They were valuable livestock during long voyages and at newly established settlements, but some later escaped or were deliberately released, allowing them to survive and reproduce without the protection and feeding provided on farms.
The modern feral swine population is not necessarily descended from one original group. Over the centuries, different populations were established in different places. Eurasian wild boar were also introduced later, particularly for hunting, and some bred with feral domestic pigs. That mixture has helped create an animal capable of living in a remarkably broad range of environments. Feral swine are highly adaptable and can feed on a wide variety of food. Their powerful snouts allow them to turn over soil while searching for roots, insects and other food, leaving disturbed ground behind. USDA researchers say their ability to reproduce quickly and adapt to different habitats has helped them persist across their introduced range.
A problem that reaches beyond farms
The most visible damage often comes from the way feral swine feed. Their rooting can tear up fields and pastures, while wallowing and trampling can damage vegetation and disturb soil. According to USDA, feral swine damage crops through direct feeding as well as rooting, trampling and wallowing, affecting corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, peanuts and vegetables. Their impact also extends into natural ecosystems, where they consume plants and animals and compete with native wildlife for food and other resources.
The economic burden of feral swine is substantial, but its full cost remains difficult to quantify. A study published in Pest Management Science found that the widely cited $1.5 billion annual estimate came from a 2007 calculation based on an estimated 5 million wild pigs and roughly $300 in annual damage and control costs per animal. The researchers noted that the earlier estimate relied partly on informal expert consultations and did not account for the full range of costs associated with feral swine. Their updated assessment placed the minimum annual economic cost at $3.4 billion, covering impacts on agriculture, human and animal health, the environment and property, while noting that some losses remain difficult to measure.

Feral swine are particularly difficult to manage because they can move between forests, agricultural land and wetlands, while human activities can also transport them into new areas. As a result, control efforts focus not only on reducing established populations but also on preventing the animals from spreading into places where they are not yet established. Management programmes work with state, tribal and local partners to limit their impacts on agriculture, natural resources, property, and animal and human health.
The history of feral swine also shows why controlling an established invasive population can be difficult. Once pigs become self-sustaining in the wild, their ability to adapt to different habitats and reproduce rapidly makes local control increasingly challenging. What began as a livestock resource has therefore developed into a long-term wildlife-management problem, requiring efforts to limit both population growth and further spread.
More than four centuries after European pigs were first introduced to North America, their descendants have become an established invasive species rather than livestock confined to farms. Research describes feral swine as a growing ecological and economic concern because their expansion affects both natural ecosystems and human-managed landscapes.
