As workers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California prepared to dig trenches for the future NIF complex, they expected to see the usual dirt, rocks, and utility lines. However, during this work, workers stumbled upon the remains of a mammoth buried underneath the land earmarked for one of the world's most advanced laser research facilities. This discovery occurred in 1997 during the preparations for a giant scientific experiment in Livermore, California.

The remains of the prehistoric animal belong to a mammoth, which lived during the Ice Age period. Such a discovery made an interesting comparison between two worlds. Above ground, researchers worked on creating one of the most technologically sophisticated laboratories, while underground, there were the bones of another animal from a completely different epoch.

Unforeseen discovery in California


The prehistoric creature's bones were discovered during normal construction work, not as a part of a special project aimed at unearthing fossils. The UC Museum of Paleontology explains that mammoths belonged to a family of proboscideans, which comprised elephant ancestors suited to cold weather and grassy plains.
