When an imperial playground became nature's revenge
Saihanba was never a barren site. It had been a royal hunting ground since the Liao Dynasty (10th century), later formalized by the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi Emperor in 1681, who used it for imperial hunts. In the nineteenth century, however, with the changing of political ideologies, it became available for farming and lumbering. The wars, the widespread deforestation, and constant grazing did the rest.

369 young people vs. a desert
Had this been a Hollywood script, someone would have left in the very first act. The Chinese publication People’s Daily Online states that, with shovels and determination and little else, the first team came. Temperatures fell below –40°C and seedlings were frozen. Many more died due to drought. More than 90% of the original seedlings failed, and the foresters had to reevaluate their plans, with respect to species and planting techniques.
They persevered in trying various things without giving up. They discovered plants that were more resistant to their environment, more adept at their planting methods, and did less landscaping and more forestry. All the trees that survived were used as the next season’s data. Slowly, despite everything, the chances for survival grew.
A forest built by grandparents, protected by grandchildren
Saihanba's most important accomplishment may not be environmental; it's generational. As multiple CGTN reports documented, most of the original foresters did not survive to witness the growth of trees in the forest that they had planted. Their children continued to pass it on to their children, and the new generation received not only their job, but their identity of stewardship as well.
Saihanba now covers an area of about 76,700ha (190,000ac) and is the largest man-made forest in the world, according to China Daily. It helps to prevent desertification, to conserve water resources, to rehabilitate biodiversity, and to protect Beijing and its neighboring regions from sandstorms. The United Nations awarded the Saihanba Afforestation Community the “Champions of the Earth” award in the "Inspiration and Action" category in 2017. The forest also absorbs approximately 747,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, and generates large quantities of oxygen, demonstrating the forest's ability to achieve measurable climate benefits and healthier ecosystems when it is restored.

Behind narratives of Saihanba is an alluring thought: if you plant enough trees, environmental issues evaporate. In reality, things aren't so simple. The importance of matching the right species to the right landscape has been repeatedly highlighted by ecologists, who emphasize that the restoration process will only be successful if it is driven by a diversity of species, long-range management, and local ecosystems. Unsustainable planting schemes can lead to depletion of groundwater, a decrease in biodiversity, or simple failure.
Saihanba weathered the storm because it wasn't just a one-season publicity project, but decades of science adaptation, institutional commitment and ongoing monitoring. Saihanba is not a one-size-fits-all blueprint. Not all deserts turn into forests, and not all restoration efforts are to be emulated by China. However, may resonate in a culture that craves instant results. Sometimes the most radical environmental technology isn't AI or carbon capturing. Sometimes it's persuading one generation that they might never sit under the shade of trees that they plant.
