Back in 1935, the U.S. Forest Service adopted a rule that sounded perfectly sensible on paper: fires were to be controlled by 10 a.m. the morning after they were reported. The policy became a defining feature of American fire suppression for more than four decades. It gave firefighters a clear target and reflected a growing belief that wildfires should be stopped quickly rather than allowed to spread. That thinking had been building since 1910, when a series of fires tore through Idaho and Montana in a matter of days and left the Forest Service deeply wary of letting any blaze burn unchecked. What few people could have known at the time was how much the next few decades of aggressive fire suppression would change some western forests, as fires became less frequent and fuels gradually accumulated. The long shadow of a well-meaning rule

Here is the part that tends to surprise people. Even after the rule changed on paper, its effects did not disappear overnight. What followed was a gradual change in thinking as researchers, firefighters, and land managers gained a better understanding of fire's ecological role.
