Illinois man learns fate after following security guard from nightclub to gas station and shooting him at least 10 times

A 25-year-old Illinois man will spend the remainder of his life behind bars following his sentencing on July 10, 2026 (Friday), for a fatal shooting three years ago. Lamentae R. Turner was found guilty of first-degree murder in the January 2023 killing of Stashaun Wheeler, a 35-year-old security guard. According to prosecutors, Turner tracked Wheeler from a Peoria nightclub to a nearby Casey’s gas station parking lot where Turner and an accomplice opened fire.

Surveillance footage and cellphone data showed Turner was with Wheeler at the nightclub before following him to the gas station, PEOPLE reported, citing a Peoria County news release. In a video captured from the station, Turner and another man were seen approaching Wheeler and firing at least 10 shots before fleeing on foot.

Authorities responded to the scene upon receiving information and found Wheeler in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. After the defense requested multiple continuances, Turner’s sentencing hearing was held earlier this month, when he was sentenced to life in prison. He had been convicted in May 2025 of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.


At the hearing, Wheeler’s mother, Kelly Bond, addressed the court, describing the loss of her son as the “most painful experience” and saying “her life would never be the same,” according to the release. “If I have to spend the rest of my life visiting my son in the cemetery, then the defendant should spend the rest of his life in prison,” Bond said.
