An air conditioner that appears to be continuously working but fails to cool your house doesn’t necessarily indicate a malfunctioning thermostat or a refrigerant issue. You should check the filter. An air conditioner filter catches dust, pollen, pet hair, and other contaminants before they enter the device. This accumulation results in less air flowing through the device and makes the machine exert more effort. Cleaning or replacing the filter helps the air conditioner run efficiently.

The U.S. Department of Energy reveals that replacing or cleaning a clogged filter could decrease the energy consumption of an air conditioner by 5-15 percent. Clogged or loaded filters might impair the filtering process, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Fortunately, changing or cleaning an AC filter is one of the most straightforward maintenance processes.

Why dirty filters affect cooling

A clogged filter inhibits the proper flow of air. As such, the AC will have to work harder to keep your house cool, thereby putting stress on the unit.
This may cause:

  • Poor airflow from vents
  • Inefficient cooling of rooms
  • Increased energy bills
  • Increased dust in the home
  • Wear and tear of the unit
In extreme cases, inadequate airflow may be one of the causes of ice buildup on the evaporator coils.
This is particularly true during the hot season, when the AC will operate for extended periods.

How often should you clean the filter?

It depends on what type of system you own. If it's your central air system, you will usually have to change your filters every 60 to 90 days, but those with pets or allergies might have to change their filters more frequently.
If you are using a window unit or your ductless mini split, many companies recommend checking them every month and cleaning them every few weeks while your system is heavily used.

This is a general rule for your filters: If they are gray and dusty, they need replacing.

How to clean an air conditioner filter

Before starting, turn off and unplug the unit for safety.

For window AC units or ductless mini splits:

1. Remove the filter
Open the front panel and slide the filter out carefully. Most filters in these systems are reusable mesh filters.

2. Vacuum loose dust
Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and lint.
3. Wash with warm water
Rinse the filter under lukewarm water. If grime has built up, use mild dish soap and gently wash it.
Avoid harsh cleaners or scrubbing too aggressively, which can damage the mesh.
4. Let it dry completely
This step matters. Never reinstall a damp filter. Moisture can encourage mold growth.
5. Reinstall the filter
Once fully dry, slide it back into place and close the panel.

What about central AC filters?

The majority of central air conditioning filters are non-reusable and cannot be cleaned.
In case of non-reusable filters:

  • Take out the old filter.
  • Measure its size from the frame.
  • Install a new filter with arrows pointing to the proper direction.
  • Write down the date of replacement.
In case you do not know what type of filter you have, refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

A small task with a big payoff

Changing your air conditioner filter does not seem like an immediate problem, but there is no doubt that it can make a difference in the level of comfort and electricity consumption.

Improvement in cooling performance does not necessarily mean turning down the thermostat. It begins with changing your dirty air conditioner filter.
