It took more than three decades, but investigators have finally identified the killer of Celestina Perez, who was 24 at the time of her death. The case dates back to 1995, when Perez was assaulted and murdered in Springfield, Massachusetts. After 31 years, Perez’s family now knows who was responsible for the killing of the mother of four. Authorities say advances in DNA technology provided the breakthrough that delivered long‑awaited answers.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2026, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced that Joseph James Ceravolo Jr. has been identified as the man who assaulted and killed Celestina Perez. Ceravolo died of natural causes in 2013. With this revelation, the homicide investigation into Perez’s death is now officially closed.

Prosecutors emphasized, however, that the evidence firmly establishes Ceravolo’s responsibility for the killing. “If Ceravolo were alive today, he would be charged with the murder of Ms. Celestina Perez,” Gulluni said in a statement. An autopsy determined that Celestina Perez died from asphyxia caused by manual strangulation, along with blunt‑force trauma to her head, and her death was ruled a homicide.


Detectives interviewed her family, friends, and those who had been with her before her death, canvassed the neighborhood, and pursued leads, but no suspect was identified at the time. In recent years, the Hampden District Attorney’s Office Unresolved and Unidentified Case Investigation Unit selected the case for renewed investigation, believing advances in DNA testing could provide answers.



How DNA helped in identifying the killer?

Investigators suspected Perez’s attacker may have injured himself during the assault, making preserved bloodstains on her clothing critical evidence. Earlier forensic testing in 2009 did not yield sufficient DNA for STR analysis, and no further testing was conducted then.



According to Gulluni, subsequent testing of Perez’s preserved clothing by the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory detected blood on her underwear and developed a major male DNA profile suitable for CODIS entry. The profile matched Joseph James Ceravolo Jr., who was 32 and living in Springfield at the time of Perez’s death, with results excluding 99.99 percent of the population. District Attorney Anthony Gulluni authorized additional independent testing by DNA Labs International, which confirmed the same profile from a separate bloodstain, with a probability of one in 130 million that an unrelated person could be included.

Ceravolo also could not be excluded from a DNA mixture found on Perez’s jeans. Two forensic laboratories independently tested bloodstains from different areas of her clothing and identified the same major male DNA profile, conclusively linking Ceravolo to the crime.

Perez was 24 years old and the mother of four young children when she was killed. On the afternoon of June 2, 1995, two men walking through Gurdon Bill Park discovered her body in a ravine near Genesee and Warwick streets in Springfield’s Lower Liberty Heights neighborhood.
