Harley-Davidson has recalled nearly 17,000 Softail motorcycles in the US over a rear brake issue that could increase crash risk. According to the recall notice announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on April 13, "The rear brake line may contact the Body Control Module (BCM), resulting in a hole in the brake line, a brake fluid leak, and loss of the rear brakes."

“If brake fluid loss remains undetected, rear braking may be compromised, increasing the risk of a crash,” it explained.

Which models are affected in Harley-Davidson softail models recall?

The issue impacts specific 2025–2026 Softail models built with a narrow frame and new electrical architecture:

  • 2025–2026 FLHC: 3,549 units (Oct. 3, 2024 – Mar. 12, 2026)
  • 2025–2026 FXBB: 4,799 units (Oct. 3, 2024 – Mar. 16, 2026)
  • 2025–2026 FXLRS: 3,308 units (Dec. 5, 2024 – Mar. 16, 2026)
  • 2025–2026 FXLRST: 5,338 units (Oct. 3, 2024 – Mar. 16, 2026)
Motorcycles with a wider frame are not part of the recall. “The other model year 2025 and 2026 Softail models have a different frame geometry (wide frame) and are not included in this recall.”

How did the issue surface?

The problem came to light in March after a customer reported “inoperable brakes” on a 2025 FXLRST model. An investigation identified three additional reports involving brake fluid loss or rear brake failure.

Despite the defect, no injuries have been reported so far.

What owners should do?

The fix will involve replacing the BCM caddy and related hardware across all affected motorcycles.

Dealers will also inspect the rear brake line and replace it if damaged. The updated design repositions the BCM to create more space from the brake line.
