GAS Prices Today March 31, 2026: Rising crude oil prices are continuing to drive fuel costs higher across the United States, adding strain on commuters as the spring season, which began on March 20, 2026, gets underway. Data from the AAA Fuel Prices website shows that drivers are increasingly feeling the pinch at the pump.

The steady increase in crude oil has directly pushed up retail gasoline prices. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline rose to $4.018, up from $3.990 on Monday, March 30, signaling a continued upward trend.

Fuel prices, however, differ significantly across the country’s most populous states, reflecting notable regional variations. From the West Coast to the South and the Northeast, drivers are encountering a wide range of costs, with some regions seeing considerably higher prices than others. This disparity highlights how location remains a key factor in everyday fuel expenses, even amid broader market shifts.

In an attempt to ease pressure on the market, the White House announced in March 2026 that it would release 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over a four-month period. Despite this move, there has been little immediate relief, as crude oil prices remain elevated and continue to push fuel costs upward.

Here are the gas price averages (per gallon) for the top 5 US states by population (Tuesday, March 31, 2026):
