GAS Prices Today April 2, 2026: Surging crude oil prices are once again driving up fuel costs across the United States amid ongoing Iran war, placing a growing burden on motorists as the spring season officially got underway last month on March 20. Fresh data from the AAA Fuel Prices platform shows that drivers nationwide are paying more at the pump, with little sign of relief in the near term.

The rise in crude oil has fed directly into retail gasoline prices. As of Thursday, April 2, 2026, the national average for a gallon of regular gas climbed to $4.081, up slightly from $4.064 a day earlier (April 1). While the increase may appear modest, it reflects a persistent upward trend that has been steadily squeezing household budgets.

At the same time, fuel costs are far from uniform across the country. Prices differ sharply among the most populous states, revealing clear regional gaps. Motorists on the West Coast, for instance, continue to face some of the highest prices, while parts of the South generally see lower averages. Meanwhile, drivers in the Northeast fall somewhere in between, illustrating how geography remains a key factor in determining how much Americans pay for gasoline.

In response to mounting pressure, the White House announced in March 2026 a plan to release 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over a four-month span. The move was intended to stabilize supply and curb rising prices. However, the impact has so far been limited, as crude oil markets remain tight and continue to push fuel costs higher due to unrest in Middle East.

Here are the gas price averages (per gallon) for the top 5 US states by population (Thursday, April 2, 2026):
