On this day, a series of scientific breakthroughs, political turning points, and cultural milestones reshaped the modern world. In 1942, British physicist James Stanley Hey made a discovery that would open an entirely new field of astronomy. While operating British radar systems during World War II, Hey noticed unusual radio interference that appeared at sunrise and disappeared at sunset.

Initially suspected to be enemy jamming, the signal was later traced to a sunspot moving across the Sun’s surface, confirming the first detection of solar radio waves and marking the birth of solar radio astronomy.

Decades later, global events again dominated headlines. A powerful magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck Chile, triggering a devastating tsunami and killing more than 500 people, making it the country’s deadliest seismic disaster since 1960.

In another historic moment, US President George H.W. Bush ordered a ceasefire effective at midnight and declared victory in the Persian Gulf conflict, bringing an end to a war sparked by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.

The date also carries lasting political and cultural significance. In 1693, The Ladies’ Mercury, widely regarded as the world’s first women’s magazine, was published in London. In 1900, meetings between the Trades Union Congress and the Independent Labour Party laid the groundwork for what would become the UK Labour Party.

In popular culture, 1996 saw the debut of Pokémon Red and Green in Japan, launching a global entertainment phenomenon. The day is also remembered for darker history: in 1933, Germany’s Reichstag was destroyed by fire, an event that accelerated the Nazi regime’s consolidation of power.
