2008 – Kosovo declares its independence: Kosovo declared independence on February 17, 2008. The moment brought the culmination of a long and difficult process that had its origins in Belgrade’s oppression of the Kosovars, Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority, in the 1990s, according to the European Council on Foreign Relations.
1992 – Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer is jailed for life: Dahmer was sentenced to life in prison by a court in Wisconsin for murdering and dismembering 15 young men and boys. According to the BBC, Dahmer, 31, failed to convince the jury that his cannibalism and necrophilia were the result of madness.
1963 – Michael Jordan was born: Michael Jordan is a former basketball legend. Born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York, US, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest all-around players in the history of the game. Throughout his illustrious career on the basketball court, he won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls (1991–93, 1996–98), and he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player five times (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1998).
1913 – The “Armory Show” opens in New York: The Armory Show was held from February 17 to March 15, 1913. It was an exhibition of painting and sculpture at the Sixty-ninth Regiment Armory in New York City.
According to Britannica, the show was originally conceived by its organizers, the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, as a selection of representational works exclusively by American artists, members both of the National Academy of Design and of the more progressive Ashcan School and The Eight.
1904 – “Madama Butterfly” premiere: Madama Butterfly premiered at La Scala in Milan on February 17, 1904. It is an opera in three acts. It was originally composed in two by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto written by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera remains one of the most frequently performed works in the operatic repertoire.
