Facing Instagram messaging glitches, connection issues and other failures in US? Thousands report app outage

Instagram experienced a widespread service disruption that affected several core functions of the platform, particularly its messaging system. Thousands of users reported problems with Instagram Direct Messages (DMs), saying they were unable to send or reply to chats, which interrupted conversations across personal and group messages.

According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, more than 10,000 users reported issues with Instagram, with the majority of complaints coming from the United States. Reports also emerged from other regions.

Direct Messages (DMs) among the most affected features

Most user complaints were related to sending and replying to messages through Instagram’s chat system. Many users said messages failed to send, replies remained stuck, or conversations did not update in real time. In several cases, users could read earlier messages but were unable to send new ones.


The disruption effectively paused ongoing conversations on the platform, which relies heavily on its messaging feature for daily communication. Instagram DMs allow users to exchange text messages, photos, videos, posts and voice notes.

App performance issues also widely reported

Data from outage monitoring services indicated that the Instagram app itself accounted for a large share of complaints. Many users said the application was slow to respond, failed to load properly, or displayed errors while attempting to use messaging features.

Downdetector data also showed that some users experienced server connection problems, suggesting that the issue may have been related to backend service disruptions.

Posting and publishing content temporarily affected

Beyond messaging, several users reported difficulties with posting and publishing content on the platform. Some users said they were unable to upload new posts or complete the publishing process after selecting photos or videos.

Users turn to other platforms to confirm outage

As the service issues spread, many users turned to other social media platforms to check whether Instagram was down. Several posts described difficulties replying to friends or sending messages through chats.


As of the time of reporting, Instagram’s parent company Meta had not officially confirmed the cause of the outage.
