Millions around the world will mark Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, with campaigns, clean-ups, and sustainability-focused gatherings. The annual observance, created to spark environmental activism, now engages communities across the globe, including several public events in California.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about environmental protection. It was founded by activists aiming to mobilize people to clean up and preserve a planet that is now home to roughly 8 billion humans and trillions of other organisms.

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, and grew into what is widely described as the largest secular day of protest in the world. According to EARTHDAY.ORG, the initial movement led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of major environmental laws.

Is Earth Day a public holiday?

Earth Day is not a federal holiday in the United States. However, schools, nonprofits, and local groups often organize volunteer drives, clean-ups, workshops, and festivals to mark the day.

Why is Earth Day on April 22?

When organizers first planned the event, they wanted strong student participation. The date was chosen to fall between spring break and final exams so college students could attend teach-ins and protests. As the movement expanded nationwide, April 22 became the official date.

While April 22 is observed in the United States, some countries celebrate it on the spring equinox.
