China has stealthily built a 510-foot replica of a US Navy warship in the Taklamakan Desert, sparking renewed interest in its military training and weapons-testing capabilities, according to a report in the New York Post. Analysts reportedly believe the life-size target is designed to help the People's Liberation Army test anti-ship missiles, refine targeting systems, and simulate strikes against high-value naval assets. The replica highlights China's growing focus on preparing for potential maritime conflicts and improving its ability to counter advanced US naval forces.

Images released by US-based satellite imaging company Vantor, as quoted by the outlet, appear to show a replica of a US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the Taklamakan Desert. The model was spotted at a site where Beijing has previously built mock-ups of American warships for military training and weapons-testing exercises. The mock vessel consists a helicopter landing deck, bridge, and deck guns similar to those found on US Navy ships.

According to Newsweek, Destroyer Squadron 15, the largest forward-deployed combat force of its kind, consists of 10 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and is based in Japan under the command of the US 7th Fleet. Its ships frequently encounter China's naval forces while conducting operations across the Pacific region.

As per the New York Post report, China has repeatedly used the Taklamakan Desert in the Xinjiang region to build life-size replicas of US Navy vessels for military training purposes. The latest discovery is part of a broader pattern that stretches back several years, with satellite imagery previously revealing full-scale mock-ups of American warships and aircraft carriers at the same remote testing site.

In 2021, satellite images revealed that Beijing had built detailed replicas of a US aircraft carrier and at least two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, reinforcing assessments that the site is used to simulate attacks on American naval vessels during military training and weapons-testing exercises.

This latest revelation highlights China's continued focus on preparing for a potential high-intensity military conflict. Analysts say the construction of increasingly sophisticated mock US naval targets suggests Beijing is investing heavily in realistic combat training and long-range strike capabilities, despite the current diplomatic engagement between China and the United States.
