Castaic gas line explosion shuts 5 freeway, triggers wide shelter‑in‑place order in Northern LA county
A natural gas transmission line explosion above the 5 Freeway in Castaic forced a full freeway closure and a shelter-in-place order for residents. Firefighters responded to reports of a loud blast and gas leak, prompting traffic diversions and war...

California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert shortly after 5 pm, closing northbound and southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the Castaic area as well as key connector routes used for detours.
Traffic quickly backed up for miles along one of California’s busiest north–south corridors at the height of the holiday travel period, with northbound vehicles diverted toward state Route 126 and southbound traffic routed to state Route 138.
Residents in the broader Santa Clarita Valley reported feeling their homes shake from the initial explosion and described a roaring sound “like a jet engine,” reported NBC 7.
Shelter‑in‑place order for Castaic residents
The Los Angeles County Fire Department issued a shelter‑in‑place order at about 5:40 pm, covering much of Castaic and surrounding communities near the blast site. Residents within roughly a one‑mile radius of the ruptured line were instructed to remain indoors, close all doors, windows and vents, and turn off HVAC systems to reduce exposure to gas in the air.The order was issued for the residents of:
- West of I-5
- South of North Red Oak Court
- North of Park Vista Drive
- East of Meadow Grass Drive, Victoria Road, and Mandolin Canyon Road
By around 6 pm, gas company personnel had shut off both sides of the affected transmission line, significantly reducing the volume of escaping gas, though responders continued to address residual leakage and monitor the area for hot spots.
Cause of the rupture and infrastructure risks
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the transmission line rupture, and the incident remains under active investigation. Early field reports relayed to local media by Sheriff’s Department deputies indicated the failure might be linked to a recent mudslide in the rugged terrain above the freeway, though officials stressed this remains unconfirmed. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
