Why dead trees matter more than they look
Snags might seem like the least useful things left standing after a fire, but they can remain important to wildlife as the forest recovers. Insects colonise the dead wood, providing food for woodpeckers, chickadees and other insect-eating birds. Cavity-nesting species use the trunks for nesting, while other birds rely on them as perches to search for food or watch for predators above regenerating vegetation. A USDA Forest Service review of postfire logging research similarly notes that birds that rely on standing dead trees for foraging and nesting can be particularly vulnerable when those structures are removed. The Labrador study therefore highlights how clearing burned trees can remove habitat features that remain useful to birds long after the fire itself has passed.
The effects can vary between species because birds use post-fire landscapes in different ways. Some depend more heavily on the physical structures left behind, while others can make use of the new vegetation that develops as a burned area regenerates. This means that the consequences of removing snags are not limited to the loss of individual trees. They can also change the mix of resources available across the recovering forest.
Dead trees can remain useful even as they begin to decay. Their trunks and branches provide surfaces where insects can live, while cavities and broken limbs create places that birds can investigate for food or use for nesting. As vegetation grows back around them, these standing remnants can form part of the changing structure of the forest. Removing them all at once therefore takes away a feature that may remain useful during several stages of recovery.

A similar question arises in how burned and storm-damaged woodland is managed more widely. Salvage logging after a fire can serve legitimate safety or economic purposes, particularly where damaged trees threaten roads, buildings, workers or other infrastructure. But the Labrador findings show why removing every standing dead tree can have ecological consequences.
Where safety and other management considerations allow, retaining some snags can preserve habitat while hazardous trees are removed. A USDA Forest Service review of postfire logging research has similarly highlighted the wildlife value of dead trees and the potential effects of removing them from burned forests. The point is not that every dead tree should be left standing, especially where it creates a clear hazard. Rather, the research shows that a burned forest is not simply a collection of damaged trees waiting to be cleared.
The dead wood left behind can be part of the recovering ecosystem. For birds, it can provide food, nesting opportunities and perches while the surrounding vegetation changes. Removing all of it may make a forest look cleaner in the short term, but the Labrador study shows that this tidy-up can also change how birds use the landscape.
